The Umbria region of central Italy is famous for its lovely small and medium-sized cities – Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, Gubbio, Spello, Orvieto, and many others – which every year draw throngs of appreciative visitors. Todi must also be numbered among these and offers the usual attractions –art, landscape, monuments, and cuisine. In Todi they can find such sites as the late-medieval Palazzo del Priori and Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the magnificent Bramante-designed Tempio di Santa Maria della Consolazione, and a series of imposing palaces while sampling the black truffle- based dishes of the succulent local cuisine. Wine is also part of the picture, but for most of its history the city has been in the shadow of nearby Orvieto. Started with the efforts of nine wineries tightly linked to the territory, DOC TODI spreads out in the area of four towns: Collazzone, Massa Martana, Montecastello di Vibio, Todi. Todi is the biggest of the four towns and is the most important for its wine growing and producing activity. It is from Todi that the DOC takes its name. Cantina Tudernum was founded in 1958 by 57 vineyard owners that came together to produce and market wine as a cooperative. Initially, Cantina Tudernum counted only a few hectares of cultivated land but grew steadily to reach 650 hectares of vineyards between 1975 and 1995. In 1995 the company’s vineyard park was downsized to the current 400 hectares as part of a company-wide redevelopment plan that would mark the beginning of a new area of excellence for Cantina Tudernum. The winemaking is done under the charge of the team of oenologists, assisted by talented consultant Emiliano Falsini.
