In year 1931 Jakob Hammel began to develop the wine business with his son Richard, a business that he handed over to the latter in 1944. In 1947, Richard Hammel creates the public limited company HAMMEL S.A.. The same year, Mr. Charles Rolaz joined the company as a shareholder and director alongside Richard Hammel. Together, they give a great boost to the House which develops considerably. Today, Domaines Rolaz and Maison Hammel are among the most renowned producers in Switzerland. Owners and tenants of renowned Domaines, Clos and Châteaux, they control all stages of wine production, from growing the vines to bottling. The company cellars the harvest of nearly 150 ha of vineyards, including 8 estates owned in the cantons of Vaud (La Côte and Chablais) and Valais, and 8 other estates, partners for several generations (Vaud and Geneva), vinified, bred and marketed exclusively for Switzerland. One of those domaines is Clos de la George. Entirely surrounded by walls, this prestigious monopoly covers 8 hectares of terraced vineyards. The exposure is perfect. Its vines see the sun from morning to evening. The mineral, complex Chasselas with a flinty nose of course reigns supreme. Confidential, the Chardonnay is eyeing the side of Meursault. The Reds are not to be outdone with beautiful cuvées of Pinot Noir and Gamay and, recently, a splendid Syrah of great purity of expression. Manual harvesting, modest yields, vinification of each plot separately, long fermentations, aging on lees, this rigor makes it possible to produce distinctive and concentrated wines that perfectly express their exceptional terroir. The magnificent cellar dug into the rock with its large oak casks is also worth a visit.
