Domaine Karanika works in harmony with nature to protect the health of people and the Earth, all while producing the finest quality wine. The organic vineyards at the Amyndeon plateau in the far Northwest of Greece include old Xinomavro vines (55-60 years), the younger Assyrtiko, Cabernet Sauvignon and the almost forgotten Limniona. Wines range from the sparkling Karanika Brut, red Xinomavro/Limniona Cabernet blends and the razor-sharp white Assyrtiko, to the luscious rosé from Xinomavro. Karanika’s winemaking philosophy is minimal intervention in viticulture and vinification. The winery follows nature as opposed to trying to control it. That means no pumping to transport must and wines; instead gravity, pigeage, adding only sulfites at bottling and Montmorillonite clay to the wine, and the use of homeopathic sprays in the vineyard. Karanika works according to Maria Thun’s biodynamic calendar in the winery and vineyard, therefore the wines ‘breathe terroir,’ are crystal clear, intensely aromatic and have considerable length on the palate. These are straightforward, honest wines. Laurens Hartman and his wife Annette started Domaine Karanika in 2008 which was named after his mother’s Greek last name Karanika.
