I Veroni is a certified organic winery located in the Chianti Rùfina area, about 10 km from the city of Florence. The history of the farm dates back to the end of the 15th century, when it was owned by the Gatteschi noble family. The oldest historical document found that refers to the Fattoria I Veroni as an agricultural complex date back to 1582 and is the will of Bartolomeo d’Angiolo Gatteschi, personal physician of Cosimo I dei Medici. The name “i veroni” derives from “verone”, an ancient Tuscan term that denotes an unroofed terrace, especially in the agricultural environment, the covered terrace that ends with an external staircase of the house. In fact, in the Fattoria I Veroni there were large brick terraces, of which only one remains today. The company covers an area of 70 hectares, 20 of which are planted with vineyards. The rest of the area is planted with olive groves with a total of about 4,000 olive trees. The estate extends from about 100 metres above sea level to an altitude of 350 metres above sea level, in the ancient Pieve di San Martino in Quona, where the vineyards are located. In 2007, the renovation of the inn, another important feature of the business, was completed. It was once the farmhouse of Podere Pianottolo, surrounded by the vineyard “I Domi”. The construction and historic restoration of this testimony to farm life allows I Veroni to accommodate friends and clients in 9 welcoming and refined farm apartments, set in a distinctive and unique Tuscan landscape. The team at I Veroni, under the leadership of Luca Innocenti and Lorenzo Mariani, are working to replace old barrels, and they have purchased a new pneumatic press. They also acquired an additional 4.5 hectares of organic Sangiovese and Canaiolo in the La Casellina area of the appellation.
