Rippon is a distinct parcel of land overlooking the Southern Alps on the western shores of Lake Wānaka, and it is renowned for its breathtaking setting as well as its distinct microclimate. The combination of glacial soils and a unique microclimate creates an ideal environment for producing Pinot Noir. The land has been cared for by our family for four generations. Winemaker Nick Mills’ parents, Rolfe and Lois first planted experimental vines in 1975 on the family’s 15ha farm. The first vintage of Rippon Pinot Noir was 1989. In 2003 Nick Mills joined the family business, after going to school at the Lycée Viticole in Burgundy, as well as working with Burgundy icons Nicholas Potel of Pousse d’Or, and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Biodynamic farming, wild ferments, no irrigation and some of Central Otago’s oldest vines on their own roots all help to produce fruit and wines which are true to their place and famous around the world. Several wines are made at Rippon, including white wines, but the heart of Rippon is Pinot Noir. The flagship wine of Rippon is the “Mature Vine” Pinot Noir, a wine capable of aging and showcasing the nuances of the Wanaka terroir.
